SHORT FAIRY-STORIES
‘Puffer Jacket’
A Fairy Story by Mary-Anne Frost

Once upon a time there was a beautiful puffer jacket who lived in a clothing store. Hung on a beautiful rack, she was full of fresh air, puffed up like a magical balloon. She loved the touch of the customers and the staff who always complimented her. Though happy in the store, she dreamt that one day her thick fabric would warm up someone. And all was fair until one day, a new staff member took her off the rack and moved her into the storage room. As the staff member stuffed her roughly in a plastic bag, the puffer jacket shivered and said:
If I ask nicely and say please
Enough – enough – enough – enough
Will she stop treating me so
Rough – rough – rough – rough
When I am full of magical
Puff – puff – puff – puff
But the worst was not over. The staff member closed the bag. The puffer jacket sighed. Unable to breathe, she saw a big, long black pipe moving towards it. When it touched the bag, the power of the vacuum started sucking the air out of the bag. The puffer jacket gasped. She took a deep breath, hoping to hold it, but her big pink puffs started deflating. Sad, the puffer jacket tried to move her long sleeves but failed. The staff member smiled as the jacket closed her eyes and whispered:
Gone is my nice magical
Puff – puff – puff – puff
I don’t want to live, I had
Enough – enough – enough – enough
This deflating business is so
Rough – rough – rough – rough
And with those words, the puffer jacket fell into a deep sleep. She did not feel a thing when the staff member left her in a cold, dark storage. In her dreams, she imagined a girl wearing her on her walks outside in winter crisp air. When the morning came, the workers wrapped her in a pink bow inside a mailing box. Days later, the driver delivered her to a house where young hands unwrapped her gently and washed her clean. As soon as she dried in the sun, the jacket came to life and said:
Long did I sleep and I had
Enough – enough – enough – enough
This girl will not treat me
Rough – rough – rough – rough
I will keep her warm with my magical
Puff – puff – puff – puff
Sending many blessings,
Mary-Anne Frost
