SHORT FAIRY-STORIES
‘Vahana the Kitten Princess’
A Fairy Story by Mary-Anne Frost

Once upon a time in a magical cat kingdom there was a beautiful kitten princess named Vahana. The kitten princess never loved to sleep on her pink royal blankie and purr softly. Her favorite thing to do was to roam outside the palace walls. The cat queen did not like when the kitten princess went to catch magical rainbow bugs and poke golden honeybees in the cat grass gardens. The kitten princess was brave like her father, the cat king, before the green mist claimed his feline life. One day, when the kitten princess was walking down Catnip Road, she noticed the smell of mint and lemon from cat grass gardens was gone. A big green litter box with wheels drove down the road and revved so loudly the ground underneath her paws rumbled. But the kitten princess did not let herself be scared. She looked up at the birds thinking about how delicious they would be for dinner. She was sad she was not as good a hunter as her father. Late that night when the kitten princess went to sleep, green mist rose over the cat-towered houses of the kingdom. It’s that litter box car, who do they think they are, thought the kitten princess. So, when she saw a small kitten on Catnip Road pass out in the green mist, she pushed her chamber window open and meowed:
Spreading toxins in my kingdom is not first
Class – class – class – class
I swear on my royal feline name I shall not let this
Pass – pass – pass – pass
but I need to do more than scrunch up my face to stop that toxic
gas – gas – gas – gas
Next day, the kitten princess told the cat queen about the green litter box car. The cat queen frowned, and she went to negotiate with the green litter box car. But the negotiations failed, and so the queen, scared, issued a rule that no cat could go outside without a special pass. The kitten princess hated not to be able to go outside when she liked. She missed rainbow bugs and golden honeybees. Angry with her mother for locking her in her royal chamber, one day the kitten princess took a long pink ribbon scented with mint and lemon. She tied it around her nose. Slipping out of the royal castle, she pricked up her ears. In the distance, the loud rev of the green litter box car made her heart beat fast. She unsheathed her claws, bared her sharp teeth, and hissed like a snake with fur. The green burning lights of the litter box stared the kitten princess down, but she stood her ground. As the car sped up towards her, the kitten princess heard a whisper from her late father, the cat king: ‘Nope, nope, nope, in war, gentleness is always hope, so be soft, my kitten princess, and you will cope.’ Just as the litter box car whizzed past, the kitten princess jumped on the side of the road. A sharp metallic nail pricked her paw and she hissed:
Your engine farts because it runs on smelly
Gas – gas – gas – gas
And your car is not even brand new and first
Class – class – class – class
So, while you let it rip, I’ll meow away, and your toxins will
Pass – pass – pass – pass
With her bleeding paw, the kitten princess felt even more determined. She meowed and meowed at the green litter box car, but the car revved and turned around. It was now set to run over the kitten princess. Black rubber tires clawed black paw marks into Catnip Road. Vahana felt in her heart that it was her duty to defend it. Her fur bristled, and she fixed her gaze as the green litter box car roared toward her, trailing a green mist of toxic gas. But this time, the kitten princess closed her eyes. She imagined she was with her late father, curled up on a bed of pink flowers purring softly while he meowed about his great adventures. Her frosted whiskers felt iced with grief. Lying in the middle of the road, she coiled herself into a black fur ball and gave a big loud purr of love for her father. The purr was so loud that it turned off the green litter box car. But the magical purr also brought out the golden honeybees and rainbow bugs. They buzzed until the smelly toxic gas was gone and the air was clear again. And so, when the scent of lemon and mint from cat grass gardens returned to Catnip Road, all cats and kittens padded outside and purred softly. The kitten princess meowed:
My cat kingdom is finally free from the litter box car and its
Gas – gas – gas – gas
Every kitten is now safe to slink with tail straight up like a royal
Class – class – class – class
For cats own Catnip Road and they are free to walk without a
Pass – pass – pass – pass
Sending many blessings,
