A FAIRY STORY
‘Black Vintage Book’
A Fairy Story by Mary-Anne Frost

Once upon a time there lived a beautiful black book. And he was always happy living on the shelf in a small bookstore. His siblings were just like him, one-colored books with beautiful ornaments on their faces and vintage letters and symbols all over their bodies and spines. Every day, the black book chatted happily with his siblings. All was fair, until one day the black book was the only book left on the shelf. He dreamt that one day he too would leave the bookstore and go on adventures like his siblings who got picked up and never returned. Still, he feared the darkest corner in the bookstore, a shelf where no customers ever ventured. And so it happened that one day a new bookstore staff member came and picked up the black book. She frowned, pursed her lips and said:
You give bad vibes like a cursed
Book – book – book – book
You must go in the dark
Nook – nook – nook – nook
Because you scare customers with your
Look – look – look – look
The staff member placed the black book on a dark shelf. The black book feared the cobwebs, the dust, the darkness, but when the sun rose the next day, he saw that not a single book on his shelf looked like him. They were all full of images, glossy and shiny. None of his new siblings had ornamental lines, the vintage symbols, and the curved letters. Still, the book wanted to fit in. He tried to talk to his siblings about the meaning of his ornaments, but they ignored him. After he insisted, they replied that he is not one of them. The vintage book lost all hope. Over time, when the cobwebs wrapped around him, when the dust covered him, when the bookworms crawled over him, he stopped caring. But he also stopped loving himself the way the bookmaker creator made him and often spoke:
I no longer want to be in this
Nook – nook – nook – nook
Everyone is a shiny and colorful
Book – book – book – book
Why did the holy bookmaker give me this
Look – look – look – look
In that moment, the black vintage book noticed a girl walking towards the shelf. She wore a beautiful long black dress with golden bow belt. The book gasped in excitement. Finally, a reader who looked exactly like him – black and golden. And not only that, but the woman also wore black leather lace boots. Thin laces looked as if they were ornamental lines on the body of the black book. The woman picked up a glossy book next to the black book but quickly put it back. She smiled gently at the black vintage book and ran her fingers over his book spine. Finally, the book felt he had a chance to be picked up. When he heard the woman say that he deserves a better home, his despair healed. And as the woman gently took him out of the shelf, he said:
I am proud to be a plain black
Book – book – book – book
Because a reader loves my vintage
Look – look – look – look
And now I will forever live in her
Nook – nook – nook – nook
Sending many blessings,
Mary-Anne Frost
