SHORT FAIRY-STORIES
‘Chocolate Doughnut’
A Fairy Story by Mary-Anne Frost

Once upon a time a plain doughnut lived happily in a doughnut factory. She dreamed to wear a beautiful chocolate icing and to sweeten a child’s life. Perfectly shaped, the doughnut never feared ending up in the bin though she heard stories of ugly doughnuts dying in the rubbish bins. One day it happened that a young inexperienced doughnut decorator took her in her hands. The decorator did not want to harm the doughnut, so she dipped her in the chocolate icing without squeezing her. Holding the doughnut too long in the chocolate icing coated the doughnut in too much chocolate. As the chocolate dripped, the doughnut did not mind. Thinking herself more beautiful, the doughnut looked at her decorator and said:
You, my doughnut decorator, have such a soft
Grip – grip – grip – grip
And though the thick chocolate icing is a result of your
Dip – dip – dip – dip
I love that you made me extra chocolate to
Drip – drip – drip – drip
The decorator placed the doughnut on a tray full of perfectly decorated doughnuts. Not one doughnut dripped like she did and so the doughnut got worried. Different to her siblings, she remembered scary stories about head decorator scrunching doughnuts in her big hands. The doughnut prayed that no one would notice she dripped chocolate leaving big brown puddles on the tray. She wished she could somehow clean her chocolate until the decorator who dipped her came to her rescue. She gave the doughnut a casual swipe with her fingers. Happy, the doughnut liked her smeared chocolate traces. Still, when the head decorator saw her, she yelled at the young decorator:
This is the ugliest doughnut, a product of a bad
Grip – grip – grip – grip
You cursed it with extra chocolate from your bad
Dip – dip – dip – dip
And my shoppers only love doughnuts that don’t
Drip – drip – drip – drip
The head decorator took the doughnut and the doughnut shivered. But just at that moment came the new manager of the shop. The head decorator put down the doughnut. Am I safe from the scrunch, or will she give me a punch, wondered the doughnut. The head manager said that doughnuts who drip are still worth customers and the shop trip. When the doughnut heard this, she cheered. Finally, someone noticed her sweetness and sugary heart and not her chocolate icing body. Next day, when a boy walked in the store and picked the doughnut, he did not complain about excess chocolate icing. And so then, every time doughnuts in the tray dripped chocolate, they never ended up in the rubbish bin, but always sang their song:
We might be chocolate products of a bad
Grip – grip – grip – grip
But we do not curse that imperfect
Dip – dip – dip – dip
Because there are customers who will see beauty in the chocolate
Drip – drip – drip – drip.
Sending many blessings,
Mary-Anne Frost
