SHORT FAIRY-STORIES
‘Nevena the Lollipop’
A Fairy Story by Mary-Anne Frost

Once upon a time there was a honey lollipop named Nevena. Shaped like a bumblebee and happy, Nevena feared the sun and warmth. And so it happened that one day the seller forgot to put Nevena in his basket, and she was left in the sun. The sun melted Nevena and she lost her beautiful shape. Her wrapping cellophane became greasy. And Nevena was very sad because no one wanted to buy her, and her biggest dream was to sweeten a child’s tongue. Every day Nevena watched as other children licked their lollipops and she suffered. In her sadness, Nevena became very cold and every time someone looked at her Nevena would sing:
See the sweetness of this
Shop – shop – shop – shop
And yes, I am crooked but please
Stop – stop – stop – stop
And taste the golden honey of this
Lolli – pop – pop – pop – pop
In time, Nevena stopped singing and wished to die. When the seller placed hot mead next to Nevena, Nevena looked at it, and in the mead, she recognized her sister, born from the beehive just like her. Deformed, every day Nevena sat next to the hot mead, and she melted and melted. Though people came to buy hot mead, they ignored Nevena but that did not bother her, for she was closer and closer to her goal. But one day, the seller got angry and picked Nevena up. Nevena wished for the seller to break her up and throw her in the hot mead. At least then, in her death, she would sweeten her sister mead. But the seller, seeing how greasy, cold and crooked Nevena was, decided to throw her in the bin. The seller looked up at Nevena and said:
And at my stand customers no longer
Stop – stop – stop – stop
And they go to other places where they
Shop – shop – shop- shop
Because of you, greasy, crooked and cold
Lolli – pop – pop – pop – pop
But just at that moment came a rich man and asked to buy hot mead. The seller sold him the mead, but as Nevena was always close by, the man bought Nevena too and took her home. At home, the man drank a glass of hot mead and gave Nevena to his sick daughter. His daughter, burning from fever, did not care that Nevena was deformed, greasy and cold. She unwrapped the wrapper and put Nevena in her mouth. As the girl licked Nevena, her sweetness and coldness cured the little girl’s sore throat. And as Nevena died, the little girl grew healthy again. And not a single day has passed that the little girl did not remember her little honey cold lollipop Nevena. Every day the girl sang to Nevena:
My daddy bought you from a magical
Shop – shop – shop – shop
Because to my illness you have put a
Stop – stop – stop – stop
So honeyed, sweet and cold my
Lolli – pop – pop – pop – pop
