SHORT FAIRY-STORIES
‘Holy Recliner Chair’
A Fairy Story by Mary-Anne Frost

Once upon a time in a beautiful castle there lived a chocolate brown kitten princess. She ruled from a holy recliner chair that gave her purrs magical power. Curled up on the chair, the kitten princess sunbathed, her purrs keeping the kingdom safe. Her meows drew many birds to the fence, but she promised never to use her sharp claws to harm anyone. All was fair until one day a wicked queen showed up in the castle. She yelled out, and the kitten princess hid underneath the recliner chair. The queen searched all the house but did not find the kitten princess. Satisfied, she sat on the recliner chair claiming its power. The kitten princess grieved for her throne, but she felt scared to face the wicked queen. Angry she could not find the kitten princess, the wicked queen pressed the button to lower the recliner’s leg rest. Trapped inside the darkness of the recliner chair, the poor kitten princess said:
Wicked is the Queen and her long brown
Hair – hair – hair – hair
How dare she trap me inside my holy recliner
Chair – chair – chair – chair
And leave me gasping for
Air – air – air – air
The kitten princess did not fear the dark until the wicked queen’s voice rose. It sounded like she casted an evil spell. First, heavy raindrops hit the castle’s roof, splitting the tiles. Then, a big thunder split the sky. The birds screamed and the castle walls shook. Kitten princess had to free herself from her prison, before the evil magic destroyed the kingdom. As she opened her mouth, she realized she could not meow or purr. Desperate, and running out of air, the kitten princess collapsed on the ground, every breath quicker than the one before. And just when everything seemed forever lost, the kitten princess saw the writing on the metal bones of the recliner chair. The words were those of her father, the greatest king of all the cats: My princess is unlike other kittens, her claws are magical mittens. Reading it, the kitten princess gained strength. She scratched and tore through the brown fabric with her claws saying:
I won’t die in this death trap lacking
Air – air – air – air
Not until I reclaim my holy recliner
Chair – chair – chair – chair
and the wicked queen loses every strand of her
Hair – hair – hair – hair
When she freed herself from the prison of the holy recliner chair, the kitten princess faced the wicked queen. The wicked queen still sang the death song, but the kitten princess lifted her paw. She smiled knowing the full power of her mitten. Jumping up on the wicked queen’s head, she began tearing out the strands of her hair. The queen trashed her hands, but the kitten princess pressed her powerful paw on the queen’s mouth, stopping the queen from singing. As soon as the wicked queen saw her clumps of her hair on the floor, she stood up from the chair. The kitten princess jumped down and reclaimed her seat, showing the queen her sharp claws. With fear in her eyes, the wicked queen ran. And so then, the kitten princess never feared using her sharp claws and she often purred softly saying:
I will always sleep peacefully in my holy recliner
Chair – chair – chair – chair
But if anyone ever dares to take my
Air – air – air – air
I will use my sharp claws until they lose all their
Hair – hair – hair – hair
Sending many blessings,
Mary-Anne Frost
