‘Koala Princess’ – A Fairy Story by Mary-Anne Frost

Once upon a time there was a big fluffy koala princess living and sleeping on the eucalyptus tree. The koala princess loved chewing the leaves of the eucalyptus tree just as much as she loved sleeping. And when she slept, her magical snores kept the bush kingdom alive and peaceful. Before he died, the koala king warned his daughter, the koala princess, if she ever stopped snoring, the kingdom would turn into a land of ash, and all bush creatures would die. And all was fair in her bush kingdom until one day a loud howling startled the koala princess. Woken from her sleep, the koala princess trembled and tumbled to the ground. The sky above her grew grey. She climbed up to the tree and when she closed her eyelids, she could not fall asleep anymore. As the eucalyptus trees and banksias slowly turned to ash, she cried quietly. It was then that a red kangaroo bounced between the bushes and spoke gently:

We bush creatures guarded you in stillness as a precious

The koala princess bowed before them. She knew she had to find a way to fall asleep again and snore the kingdom into life. When a fairy wren flew up to her, she asked it to lead her to the howling. The fairy wren chirped about a magical tree called Blue Gum. The koala princess paused. Not the blum gum, I hear a painful hum, my father’s death beats there as loud as a drum, thought the koala princess. And though grief for her father clawed at her, she walked through the bush and through the ashes. When she came to the Blue Gum, a pack of red foxes waited for her. Koala princess knew she could not outrun the foxes, so she climbed up the Blue Gum. The foxes howled and tore the bark of the sacred tree. As each bark peeled away, so did the pieces of koala princess’s love for her father. She could not let the foxes destroy the bark, so she screamed:

I am a koala princess, and my royal sleep makes this kingdom a

The koala princess snarled until kangaroos, possums, emus and all bush creatures stood before her like an ash grey army. She grunted, but the bush creatures did not move. Only a tree python slithered up the Blue Gum and wrapped itself tightly. Seeing the python, the princess gazed at the bush army as if it were her father, the silent guardian. With tears in her eyes, the koala princess clawed the bark of the tree. The bark pieces fell into the small stream below. Watered by her tears, the bark pieces wove a robe of sparkly white and blue light. And as the magical robe cloaked the tree and the bush creatures, they all came back to life. The foxes, defeated, tucked their tails and bowed to the koala princess. They promised peace. And so, every day the bush creatures honored the koala princess in silence, and foxes never disturbed her. Snoring the kingdom back to life, the princess thought:

Let me sleep and snore and the kingdom will not go
